In April 2025, MEGA MILLIONS® rolled out a series of game-wide changes that reshaped the way you can play the popular game in West Virginia. These modifications were made to improve the game’s structure, introduce new MEGA MILLIONS options, and make gameplay smoother through both online and retail channels.

Introducing the 2025 modifications

Here are the major changes introduced on April 5, 2025:

  • A built-in multiplier is now included on every ticket (up to 10x)
  • There are better odds for hitting the jackpot
  • You’ll find higher starting jackpot amounts
  • This means jackpots can grow faster after each draw
  • There’s a new ticket price of $5 per play

These adjustments apply across all MEGA MILLIONS® purchases made via the West Virginia Lottery, whether you play through a physical Lottery retailer or the official website and mobile app.

How these modifications impact your play

If you play MEGA MILLIONS® in West Virginia, the revisions aim to improve your overall game by:

  • Automatically boosting non-jackpot prizes with the new built-in multiplier option
  • Making the game simpler by removing the need to manually select the Megaplier option
  • Offering larger jackpots from the start, leading to quicker prize growth across draws
  • Supporting consistent play with reactivated auto-renewal functionality on the Lottery’s online platform

Why the ticket now costs $5

The price change from previous versions of the game is tied directly to these improved options. The $5 ticket includes the multiplier and gives access to better prize tiers. This makes the pricing more reflective of the upgraded play possibilities and matches changes across other multi-state draw games.

Playing in West Virginia: What you need to do

You can play MEGA MILLIONS® by purchasing tickets from any authorized West Virginia Lottery retailer or through the Lottery’s website or mobile app. To play, just choose five main numbers from one to 70, select and Mega Ball number from one to 25 and submit your ticket for $5, now with the multiplier included by default.

Results are posted every Tuesday and Friday to the official West Virginia Lottery website, app, and in retail locations. Auto-renewals are also now available again.

The new Second Chance promotion

As part of the revision, West Virginia Lottery have also launched a MEGA MILLIONS® Second Chance promotion. For every $5 spent on MEGA MILLIONS® tickets, you earn one entry into a drawing for over $350,000 in cash prizes, with rewards up to $100,000. This adds more value to each purchase, even if your original ticket doesn’t match the drawn numbers.

Keep your gameplay safe and responsible

All these modifications are available through the secure channels the West Virginia Lottery provides. Make sure to use the available account tools such as deposit limits, self-exclusion, and notifications to help manage your play safely.

With new rules, bigger prizes, and built-in options, these improvements are already available across West Virginia, whether you play online or at your local retailer.
